Program Description
Step-by-Step is an 8 week health and nutrition program that is geared towards women who are at or near street-level. A typical session starts with a cardio warm-up and stretching followed by physical activity (ie. pilates, circuit training etc.). this concludes the first hour of the session. The second hour starts with a snack and 15 minute discussion about how each person is doing. The last 45 minutes is the small group discuss or group lesson.
Small Group Discussion/ Group Lesson
Small group discussion (2-3 per group, facilitated by volunteer) will take place at the end of each session during this time the girls will reevaluate and asses their personal goals and alter their goals for the following week. This time will also give the girls an opportunity to support each other and discuss questions and concerns.
The group lesson will take place every 4 weeks. This discussion will be catered to the reoccurring concerns from small group discussions or new topics of interest for example: nutrition, exercise, and budgeting.
Snack
Each week a healthy snack is provided by a volunteer (outside of the group, ex. Women’s small group). We feel that it is necessary to provide a healthy snack as some of these women will attend Step-by-Step without eating a healthy lunch or dinner due to financial circumstances. Therefore we feel the snack should consist of a combination of any of the following: cheese and crackers, vegetables, muffins, yogurt and nuts, fruit and juice. We will also need a continual donation of water bottles, to offer during the exercise and the nutrition lesson. NOTICE! We are in desperate need of healthy snacks for Tuesday nights! If you can commit to one time or monthly or weekly, please contact Sarah at 519-860-0124! Thank-you!
Cooking Lesson
An important part of healthy eating is learning how to grocery shop, prepare and cook nutritious meals. Therefore at least twice during the 8 weeks the leaders will take the women grocery shopping with a recipe in mind. While grocery shopping the instructor will be going over which foods are best to choose regarding ripeness, price, and name brand. Once the groceries have been purchased the group will go to a kitchen and learn how to prepare this food appropriately. Lastly the women will sit and enjoy the meal together with leftovers to take home to their families.
